Fruit and veg

When we had community allotments on Church Hill, Merstham, under a Landshare agreement, our members successfully grew:

Potato family:

Potatoes (red, white, jacket and salad)*
Tomatoes (plum, cherry and beef) - choose a variety like Outdoor Girl
Chilli pepper

* These grew really well. However, we had late season potato blight in summer 2012. Desiree and Casablanca varieties were unaffected once foliage was cut down. Some scab forms on varieties like Charlotte. No problems of eel worm.

Alliums:

Garlic*
Shallots
Leeks*
Spring onion or scallions
Onions (white and red)

* We had some rust and the plants went to flower early in the unseasonable weather in 2012

Crucifers:

Kale
Cabbage
Brussel sprouts

Net these well to avoid Cabbage White caterpillars and keep up the slug patrol.

Peas and beans:

Peas (Mange Tout, petit pois)*
Broad beans**
Runner beans
French beans

*Some pea moth found in later varieties
** The usual blackfly and slug damage to plants - pods unaffected

Circubits:

Squash and pumpkin
Cucumber
Courgette

These can struggle, or race away, depending on the year.

Beets:

Beetroot*
Spinach
Chard

Net or underplant sweetcorn with beets to avoid deer nibbling.
* Slugs love them

Soft fruit:

Blueberries
Blackcurrants
Raspberries
Strawberries
Loganberries
Redcurrants
Whitecurrants

Other:

Globe Artichoke
Jerusalem Artichoke
Lettuce
Sweetcorn - grows really well
Rhubarb - work in plenty of organic matter
Parsnips**

** As the soil is very flinty a lot of preparation is needed to avoid root vegetables forking

On site and nearby there were also plenty of brambles (for blackberries), apple trees (of eating, cider and cooking varieties) - although no apples in 2012. Wild plums, hazelnut (or cobnut?) and elder bushes and, for the more adventurous, really wild foods including nettles...

We shared out gluts (when there's so much of something you get fed up with it) and swapped produce too.Towards the end of the growing season, when the crops were tailing off, then we started the chutney and jam-making, which we also shared.
